National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA)
ILEG has had a long and fruitful partnership with NEMA. The two institutions have jointly mobilized resources and organized training for lawyers, magistrates and judges in collaboration with other institutions such as the University of Nairobi’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK). In 2004 ILEG and NEMA signed a four year memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the first of its kind between NEMA and a non-governmental institution, for the purpose of jointly mobilizing resources to conduct environmental awareness, education and training throughout the country to enhance public participation and improve environmental governance in Kenya.
National Council for Law Reporting
ILEG and NCLR signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the purpose of ensuring sound management of the natural resource base, enhanced environmental conservation and creation of public awareness of the legal and institutional frameworks for the facilitation of sustainable development in Kenya, and towards the capacity building for various institutions involved in creating jurisprudence on environmental management in Kenya.
Among other activities, the two institutions jointly:
- help create awareness of the policies, laws, regulations and institutional framework for environmental management in Kenya
- seek opportunities to disseminate information about the potential solutions to environmental problems and existing regulations to key stakeholders
- promote relevant partnerships with other organizations of similar or relevant objectives
University of Nairobi
ILEG has deep rooted relationships with the University of Nairobi particularly through School of Law and the Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP). The University is a rich source of eminent scholars who provide invaluable resources during trainings organized by ILEG while CASELAP plays an integral part in partnering with ILEG to ensure that training provided by ILEG is of the highest international standard possible.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK)
ILEG and LSK have a wonderfully symbiotic partnership. LSK partners with ILEG to provide environmental trainings for lawyers in Kenya. Trainings conducted by ILEG are recognized by the training & education committee of the LSK and are used to award points to participating lawyers as part of continuing legal education (CLE). One of ILEG Directors, Mr Makoloo, has is the convener of the Environmental Committee of the LSK. The law society plays a key role in seconding participants to attend training in environmental law for lawyers organized by ILEG.
Public Complaints Committee on the Environment (PCC)
The PCC is established under section 31 of EMCA with the twin functions of investigating any allegations or complaints against NEMA or any person regarding the environment in Kenya. The Committee consists of seven member constituting a Chairman who must be a person duly qualified to be appointed as a Judge, a representative of the Attorney-General, a representative of the Law society of Kenya, a representative of NGOs appointed by the NGO Council who shall be designated as secretary, a representative of the business community and two members appointed by the Minister for their active role in environmental management. ILEG Director, Mr Makoloo, was appointed and continues to serve as the secretary to the committee for its present term.
