About ILEG

The Institute for Law and Environmental Governance (ILEG) is a non-profit civil society organization. It was established to conduct policy research, advocacy and training with a view to generating new knowledge and influencing the development and implementation of appropriate laws and policies that support sustainable and equitable management of the environment and natural resources in Kenya.
It was created to a fill a major gap—the absence of an independent Kenyan organization for policy research, advocacy and training on legal issues linking environment, governance and sustainable development. Its mission is to enlarge policy choices for sustainable development in Kenya through research, advocacy and training.
ILEG’s objectives are:
ILEG is committed to using governance tools and principles to foster sustainable and equitable management of natural resources. It believes that formulation and implementation of sound governance policies and laws have a critical role to play in the regulation of sustainable development. It subscribes to the view that laws and policies must be developed and implemented with the active participation of those who will be most directly affected. Thus to achieve sustainability in environmental quality and equity it is imperative that the existing institutional, administrative, legal and policy frameworks concerning natural resources be reformed and restructured so as to promote the well being of all of Kenya’s citizens, especially the rural poor most directly dependent on those resources.
ILEG therefore works with local communities to enhance their access to natural resources and secure their rights to these resources by enhancing their capacity to participate in the management of these resources. It carries out legal research on various environment and natural resources issues including governance and development, participates in international regional and local legal processes and activities aimed at protecting  the environment, and, gathers, store and disseminate information relating to the environment and make it accessible to the general public.
ILEG’s ultimate goal is to be a key player in the development and improvement of environmental  management framework and jurisprudence in Kenya
